Books for Babies over 2 Years

Babies over 24 months will be more interested in understanding the words than just looking at the pictures. They are able to concentrate for longer periods of time so may want to look at slightly more intricate books.

They will be able to sit for short periods of time looking at their own books but will enjoy you spending more time reading to them too.

Toddlers should enjoy the Maisie Cat, Smidge, Spot and Miffy series'. A few more books that toddlers should enjoy are described here.

“My Cat Likes to Hide in Boxes” – Eve Sutton

“My Cat Likes to Hide in Boxes” by Eve Sutton is a beautifully illustrated book that invites toddlers to visit cats from all over the world.

This book has been a favourite for over 20 years. The fantastic rhyming text will soon be recognised by pre-schoolers. Expect to read this book again and again.

“The Elephant and the Bad Baby” – Elfrida Vipont

“The Elephant and the Bad Baby” by Elfrida Vipont is a book that subtly puts the message across that politeness is good. It tells the tale of a bad baby who is offered a lift by a large elephant and the adventure that ensues.

This was a favourite a generation ago and it's looking like another favourite for millennium children.

Balamory “What's the Story – A Story Book” – BBC

“What's the Story – A Storybook” from Balamory BBC is full of photographic images of the characters in the TV show “Balamory”. Toddlers will enjoy looking at familiar faces and locations in this book. Expect to have to take this book out and about.

“The Mess Monsters” – Beth Shoshan and Piers Harper

“The Mess Monsters” by Beth Shoshan and Piers Harper should encourage your toddlers to put all their toys away otherwise the mess monsters will get them.

Full of mess monster images and lots of crashes and thumps, “The Mess Monsters” should keep toddler occupied for a little while – or at least keep their rooms tidy.

“Meg and Mog” – Helen Nicoll and Jan Pienkowski

“Meg and Mog” by Helen Nicoll and Jan Pienkowski is the first in the long-standing series about a witch (Meg) and her cat (Mog). Meg is a good witch who lives with Mog and her owl.

The illustrations are simple and use beautifully rich colours. “Meg and Mog” is designed to appeal to toddlers as it has short sentences on each page and allows the pictures to help to tell the story.
