Books for Babies from Six Months to Nine Months

You can introduce “lift the flap” story books at this age but make sure you supervise baby because they do like to rip the flaps off.

Here are just some of the fantastic books available for babies aged between 6 and 9 months.

“Bard's Rhyme Time” – Baby Einstein

“Bard's Rhyme Time” from Baby Einstein is a lovely little book that uses the same characters that babies may see on the Baby Einstein videos and DVDs. Bard the friendly gecko introduces baby to images from the playground, walking and camping. Baby can learn to lift the flaps and discover what objects are underneath the rhyme.

“Silly Opposites” – Dr Seuss

Dr Seuss's “Silly Opposites” is a flip-the-flap book full of strange creatures! The book introduces babies to the concept of opposites like big and small and good and bad.

Initially baby will enjoy looking at the strange creatures but as language becomes more interesting to baby, he will begin to understand the concept of the book more. If in doubt, wait to buy flip the flap books until baby is over a year and a half.

“That's Not My….” Range – Usborne

Usborne's “That's Not My…” range of books will be enjoyed by babies at this age.

“That's Not My Monster”, for example, takes baby on a journey to find his monster. The book takes you through the monsters with the hairy eyebrows, the fuzzy spikes and the rough horns before baby finds the right monster with the fluffy ears. Baby will begin to anticipate the story so don't be surprised if he makes you go straight to the last page.

“Dear Zoo” – Rod Campbell

“Dear Zoo” by Rod Campbell is a lift the flap baby book that will keep baby entertained for a long time. It is full of animals that baby will come to recognize the more you read the book.

It starts off with the zoo receiving a letter asking for a pet. This results in a succession of highly unsuitable zoo animals being sent until the last pet which is just right! The baby book is even robust enough for little fingers to explore on their own after they are a year old.

Baby will enjoy sitting with you and listening to you reading through simple books now. The more animated you are about the book and the plot, the more baby will start to listen out for nuances and the rhythm of language.
