Playing with Baby from 3 Months

At three months baby will be bringing her mouth into play – everything she sees now will be brought to her mouth for analysis.

She will be interested in texture and sound so her play gym will still be of interest as she discovers more about her world. The creatures that have hung above her on the cross bar can be unhooked and given to her so she can explore them more fully.

Anything that crackles or offers a contrasting texture will encourage baby to further develop her senses. “Flip Flop” books from Lamaze can be handled by baby and she will love the different shapes and designs.

Fisher Price produces a “Classic Chorus Gym” that baby can interact with and begin to understand the process of cause and effect. Baby is placed under the gym on a floor mat and by kicking the gym's hanging toys, she is rewarded with beautiful musical songs.

Another gym by Fisher Price is the “Kick ‘n' Whirl Carnival Wheel” which is brightly coloured and, like the “Classic Chorus Gym”, can be used in three different positions depending on the age of your baby. Babies love the noise, lights and the turning balls.

You can also spend time reading together. A book like “Bath Baby” by Amazing Baby is specially made for bath time. “Bath Baby” is full of different textures, sparkles and simple baby images that baby will love. It's also a lovely texture for baby to chew on.

Have a look at the Books section of this site for more ideas about reading to baby. There are so many books to choose from that being able to read reviews and speak to other mums is helpful.

The Dr Seuss range of books is lovely for younger babies – especially the board books. Depending on your views about TV, books that have the Teletubbies or Balamory characters can be useful too.
