How to Choose and Buy Toys for Newborn Babies – 0 - 1 month

Your baby has just come into this world so toys to look for should be concerned more with sight, sensation and sound. Baby can really only see as far as your face when you're feeding him, so toys that have contrasting colours and soft, calming music will be appreciated by baby's sensitive ears.

Play Mats

You'll want to think about putting baby onto a play mat so think about what each play mat has to offer. Some, like the Tiny Love play mat, play soothing classical music while others concentrate more on the tactile feel of the mat.

Toys for the Car

Baby will spend a great deal of time in his car seat so think about a stimulating toy that can perhaps wrap around the carry handle. Whoozit produces a great wraparound toy that's full of colour and intrigue.

Don't worry about over stimulating baby. If a baby feels that there's too much going on, they go to sleep. Don't forget that baby will be spending at least 16 hours each day sleeping so make sure that his waking hours provide some experience of his world.

Cot Mobiles

Think too about the cot mobile – again Tiny Love produces a lovely mobile that pays three different classical melodies and comes with a remote control.

Other cot mobiles can be wound up and play beautiful traditional tinkly lullabies like Mamas and Papas.

Fisher Price produces an “Ocean Wonders Aquarium Cot Mobile” that isn't a traditional mobile with arms, but offers a soothing music and light show to babies.
